Editors of Inclusion Announced

Washington, DC (January 10, 2013)

The American Association on Intellectual and Developmental Disabilities (AAIDD) is extremely pleased to announce that Michael L. Wehmeyer, PhD, FAAIDD, and Karrie A. Shogren, PhD, FAAIDD, have been appointed by the Board of Directors as Co-Editors of the Association’s newest journal, Inclusion. They begin a four year term as Co-Editors on February 1, 2013.

Dr. Wehmeyer is a Professor in the Department of Special Education and Director of the Kansas University Center on Developmental Disabilities (UCEDD) at the University of Kansas, and a past-president of the AAIDD Board of Directors.  He has edited and co-edited more than a dozen books, guest edited or co-edited five different peer-reviewed journals, and served on the editorial boards for 21 peer-reviewed journals. From 2005 to 2010, he served as Editor-in-Chief of Remedial and Special Education, a well-known peer-reviewed journal in the field of special education, and most recently served as the interim Editor-in-Chief of the AAIDD journal Intellectual and Developmental Disabilities in the first six months of 2011 (bridging the editorships of Dr. Steven Taylor and Dr. Glenn Fujiura).

Dr. Shogren is an Associate Professor in the Department of Special Education at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. A past member-at-large of the AAIDD Board of Directors and co-Chair of the Fellows Task Force, she currently serves on the editorial board of Research and Practice for Persons with Severe Disabilities, and is an associate editor for three journals: Remedial and Special Education, Intellectual and Developmental Disabilities, and the International Journal of Disability, Development, and Education.

AAIDD’s Inclusion is a new, peer-reviewed journal that will provide a multidisciplinary forum for the discussion of interventions and strategies that promote the full inclusion of people with intellectual and developmental disabilities in society and will publish original articles that describe promising practices in services and supports, training, and professional development; case studies; and public policy considerations.

Drs. Wehmeyer and Shogren have noted,

"We are committed to the full inclusion of people with intellectual and developmental disabilities in the full array of their communities, and to supporting people with intellectual and developmental disabilities to live rich, full, self-determined lives. During our editorship, Inclusion will be unambiguous and unrelenting in its support of that agenda. One of the hallmarks of the peer-review process in academia is the value for a range of opinions. Inclusion will respect that hallmark and will support diverse opinions as they lead to the mission of the journal–to promote full inclusion. There is plenty of room for diversity of opinion with regard to how to achieve the mission of full inclusion.”

Published quarterly (4 issues annually) beginning June 2013, Inclusion joins the Association’s well regarded, peer-reviewed journals Intellectual and Developmental Disabilities (established 1963) and American Journal on Intellectual and Developmental Disabilities (established 1896).
