The American Association on Intellectual and Developmental Disabilities (AAIDD) is proud to announce the release of two new publications:
Conducting Inclusive Research: Tools and Practical Strategies provides tools and practical strategies to help trained researchers develop inclusive research partnerships with adults with intellectual and developmental disabilities. The book addresses a variety of topics including team development, study design, data collection and analysis, ethics, authorship, and working with an Institutional Review Board.
Authored by Ariel Schwartz of the University of New Hampshire, the book includes a chapter by Katherine McDonald of Syracuse University and pieces written by co-researchers with lived experience with disabilities.
Critical Issues in Health for People with Intellectual and Developmental Disabilities: Contemporary Research, Practice, and Policy provides a concise review of what we know across nine key areas in healthcare and health outcomes for people with intellectual and developmental disabilities .
Section I: Foundations provides a framework for understanding the essential elements of well-being, social determinants of health, and consent.
Section II: Systems examines the connections within and between systems to determine how to improve overall performance of healthcare financing and delivery, health outcomes, and IDD–competent healthcare systems.
Section III: Anchors illustrates the impact of system-wide policies and practices at the micro-level on individuals with disabilities who experience health inequity across adulthood, need mental healthcare, and would benefit from effective health promotion strategies.
A total of 61 experts contributed to the book, which is intended to inform future developments in public policy, research, and practice and can be used today by policymakers, researchers, practitioners, and students.
