Advancing Social Capital and Civic Engagement through Inclusive Technology

Content Overview:

The community can no longer be defined as a physical location, but where people connect through shared interests, shared values, shared culture, shared identity, and shared differences. As a result, we must begin to reconceptualize community living and the contributing practices in modern culture. Today, the ubiquity of technology impacts all domains of human living. Technology is integral for the realization of civic engagement and social capital in activities such as searching for employment, engaging in work, building and expanding social networks, obtaining and exchanging news, and conducting commerce (Anderson & Perrin, 2017).  Therefore, technology access becomes a key component of how we promote civic engagement and building social capital because technology can assist individuals in participating in their communities and exchanging support and resources across their social networks. In this webinar, we will reenvision community and examine the critical role technology has in promoting civic engagement and building social capital for individuals with IDD and how researchers and practitioners can measure this to improve practice, research, and policy.
