Why did you join AAIDD?
I was working on a
research project that was following a group of individuals with intellectual
disability who had lived at some point in their life in a state psychiatric
hospital. A colleague suggested that the annual conference sponsored by the
state chapter of AAIDD was a great place to disseminate our work. I joined and
began presenting at the state conferences.
Why did you choose the field of intellectual disability?
I had several interactions with individuals with intellectual disability as
a child that made me curious. My locker in high school was located between two
special education classrooms for students with intellectual disability (in the
early 1970's before the passage of PL 94-142). I decided to volunteer there
during my study hall hour and found my passion.
