Why did you join AAIDD? As an early career psychologist, I was hired by the Milwaukee County Behavioral Health Division (BHD) to provide specialized crisis services for individuals with IDD. I immediately recognized the need to expand my knowledge and expertise in the field. A colleague with years of experience informed me that AAIDD would be the best organization to help meet my professional goals and related job responsibilities.
Why did you choose the field of intellectual disability? Throughout graduate school, I was focused on gaining experience in forensic and correctional psychology. Although I learned basic skills regarding the assessment of individuals with IDD, I could not have predicted a significant change in my career trajectory. But shortly after attaining licensure as a psychologist, I decided to apply for a position with the Milwaukee County BHD. I was hired with the understanding that I would fully commit to developing expertise in the field of IDD. I quickly gained an appreciation for the unique needs of individuals with IDD and the related gaps in the behavioral health services. From a social justice perspective, I remain committed to supporting best practices in the field.
