Creating Inclusive Communities

Content Overview:

Since 2015, Temple University’s Institute on Disabilities has partnered with Values Into Action, a service organization to create systems change so that people with disabilities are able to design, choose and control their own services and supports.  Through these efforts, Participant Directed Services, or PDS, as it is commonly referred to, is becoming a household word for individuals in Pennsylvania.  This presentation will address: 1.  The role of the Supports Broker, and how this role can assist with making PDS a reality; 2.  How Pennsylvania developed a successful Supports Broker Certification Process and Network, and how this model can be replicated in other states, and; 3. The importance of person-centered planning in empowering people to self-direct.

We will then discuss the role people with disabilities play in creating inclusion. Often in the disability community, transportation and waivers are discussed, but Jeff Arsenaux will look at the complete picture; physically, emotionally, sexually, and financially. These are aspects of life that are assumed for people without disabilities, so Jeff will explore why these feelings are not expected of people with IDD.

Presenters:
